NSS Active Chapter Report
Summer 2026
A review of National Space Society local chapter websites and visible signs of recent activity
Summary
The scan found five chapter websites with especially clear evidence of recent maintenance and current programming: Sacramento L5 Society, National Space Society of North Texas, North Houston Space Society, Chicago Society for Space Studies, and Oklahoma Space Alliance. Several other chapters remain active but rely more heavily on Meetup, partner organizations, or less frequently refreshed homepages. The review also showed that visual modernity is not a reliable measure of chapter vitality: some plain legacy-style sites contain the freshest minutes, newsletters, and meeting notices.
Chapters with the Clearest Recent Website Activity
| Chapter | Latest visible activity | Assessment |
| Sacramento L5 Society | June 13, 2026 | Very active. Meeting material and chapter-related posts appear regularly. |
| NSS of North Texas | June 2026 | Very active. Current meetings, events, outreach, and recently revised membership material. |
| North Houston Space Society | June-July 2026 | Very active. Current monthly meeting announcements, speaker details, and outreach planning. |
| Chicago Society for Space Studies | May 29, 2026 | Very active. Recent meeting announcements, articles, and newly released project material. |
| Oklahoma Space Alliance | May 2026 | Very active informationally. The site includes 2026 minutes and current newsletters despite a legacy visual design. |
Active Chapters Whose Websites Show Activity Less Clearly
- Huntsville Alabama L5 Society (HAL5): Public programming continued in 2026, but the chapter homepage appears older and may not be the primary place where current events are announced.
- NSS Seattle: Joint NSS and Mars Society meetings were listed into June 2026. Current activity is easier to find through Meetup than through the chapter website itself.
- OASIS – Los Angeles: The organization remains active and its website is online, although clearly dated 2026 posts were less prominent than on the leading sites.
Sites That Appear Less Recently Updated
- Oregon L5 Society: The site remains reachable and advertises monthly meetings, but much of the presentation and visible content appears older.
- Denver Space Society: The chapter remains represented in NSS activities, but a clearly current chapter news stream or frequently updated local website was not readily evident.
- HAL5 chapter site: The organization appears active, but much of the visible site content and copyright material trails current chapter activity.
- NSS Seattle chapter site: The site remains useful as an archive, while newer meeting information appears to be maintained elsewhere.
Comparative Observations
- Sacramento and Chicago: Emphasize substantial articles, projects, and continuing chapter content.
- North Texas and North Houston: Use event-centered sites that make present activity easy to recognize.
- Oklahoma: Demonstrates that a plain legacy-style site can remain highly useful when minutes and newsletters are kept current.
Principal conclusion. A polished design does not necessarily indicate an active chapter, and an old-fashioned design does not necessarily indicate inactivity. The most useful chapter websites make recent meetings, newsletters, projects, and contact information immediately visible.
