Mission – Why We Exist

  • Help enthusiasts find ways to contribute.
  • Provide sources of enabling training to facilitate engineering prototyping.
  • Establish a clearinghouse for the ongoing objective analysis of proposed space development technologies.

Meeting Details for each Months Meeting

Meeting Call: Sacramento L5 Society, Local Chapter, National Space Society
Where: Virtual presence only, via Zoom
When: Second Saturday, each month beginning at 6pm PT

Call to Order

Meeting commenced at 6:00 PM PST. Members were welcomed, and new attendees introduced themselves.

Reports & Updates

President’s & Treasurer’s Report (Joe Bland)

– Status of “frozen” checking account: Still unresolved despite Larry’s efforts.

– Discussion on a new Vice President.

– Fred Becker labeled SacL5 as “dormant.”

– Creation of a shared Google Drive folder for SacL5 records.

  – Ed will checkout features of Google Drive for collaboration.

  – Discussion on setting up an L5 Society Google account.

  – Gregory to create a Gmail account for SacL5.

  – Gmail account will be used to manage YouTube access and key documents.

– Action: Follow-up with Joe on SacL5 Google login details.

– Action: Contact Kris regarding account setup.

SacL5 Website Update (Ed Kulis)

– Website development and updates, including Arduino-related content.

Updates on NSS Activities

– NSS Chapters’ Assembly (Jan Roston) & NSSCA Chapter Resources Subcommittee (Ed Kulis): Updates provided.

– NSS Chapter Committee (Joe Bland): Discussion on engagement and initiatives.

SES School Contact & MiniCube Grant Program (Paul Turner)

– Update on outreach activities and grant program progress.

Old Business

Action Items:

– Joe Bland: Create a 3D CAD model of a MiniCube.

– Joe Bland: Remove XHS from the agenda.

– Ed Kulis: Attempt to contact Kris.

– Michael Abramson: Development of White Paper on “Open Space Organization (OSO).”

New Business

– Discussion on launching a balloon flight device using one or two MiniCube flights (Ed Kulis, Paul Turner).

– Considerations on material choices for space-related projects:

  – Lightweight plastic screws.

  – Poster board vs. transparent printable materials.

  – Frame design and battery insulation requirements.

– Discussion on potential application and related subjects.

  – SpaceX explosion and commercial moon landing updates.

  – Gateway project and related funding concerns.

  – Debate on breaking SpaceX monopoly.

  – Discussion on NASA’s funding decline and policy changes.

  – Review of historical aerospace figures (Doolittle, Mueller, Billy Mitchell).

  • Balloon Device Project – See: Details
    • Project started for see details page created on website
  • Eric’s Steam Engine
    • Will run on compressed air. 
    • It’s a “Walking Beam” Design with fly-ball governors to stabilize speed with  offset cams to operate the steam valves.
  • White Paper on an Open Space Organization
    • Development of White Paper on an “Open Space Organization (OSO) (Michael Abramson)
    • Michael presented the current state of the proposed white paper.
    • We will look for other names since “Open Space Organization” has awkward connotations and  “Outer Space Organization” may be in use by other organizations.
    • Here are a few alternative suggested by Michael and Joe:
